Update at 09:31:14(GMT): Update at 17:56:09(GMT): Update at 17:47:15(GMT): Today we experienced some degradation in our outbound (SMTP) email services.
Our SMTP array had a large volume of spam email injected into it, which meant we had to take emergency maintenance steps. This involved disabling access to around 80% of our outbound servers and clearing the junk email out. Work began around 1.30PM on this issue.
In the interim, the remaining SMTP servers were pushed a tad past their capacities to handle the client load of outbound email. This meant that certain users may have received an error when sending. Moreover, due to the volume of junk email queued up, users who were able to connect may have seen some email delay issues in reaching their recipients.
We have now (by 4.30PM) mitigated the majority of the spam and SMTP servers are being re-enabled and capacity returning to normal. This means connection errors should start to disappear and sent email begin to be delivered.
